June 24th saw the opening of Dads Lane Allotments new composting toilet and pavilion, funded by the Big Lottery to the tune of £10,000, at their annual Open Day. Although the weather has been a problem and there are still a few odds and ends to finalise, the facilities are already in use and much appreciated by gardeners who are now able to spend as much time tending their plots as they wish.
The official Opening was performed by Rod Ling and Geoff Bainbridge, Chairman and Treasurer respectively of Billesley Lane Allotments, who have given Dads Lane tremendous support over the last couple of years. Geoff said ‘’we were proud and delighted to be asked to open your new facilities, which we hope will be of great benefit to all the plotholders. Well done to everyone involved.’’
Despite a weather forecast that was not particularly encouraging the Open Day went ahead on 24th June and was a great success with around 250 visitors exploring the site and enjoying tea and home made cakes and taking advantage of the plant sales, craft, bric-a brac and childrens games area. The raffle had great prizes with sponsors including Ye Olde Red Lion, Sylhet Spice Cuisine and York Supplies. A great time appears to have been had by all. Michelle Roberts, who enjoyed her visit to last years Open day couldn’t believe the difference a year could make. ‘’It’s amazing. The new toilet and pavilion are fantastic and the newly developed community garden and wildlife area, including the Jubilee hedge, is already looking great but is going to be such a peaceful and wildlife friendly area once it’s fully established. As for the Open Day, what a great atmosphere: everyone had a lovely time.’’
